The I.N.B.M.A. board “think tank” has lately been introspective about our mission to not only perform the music, but to also help new musicians learn how to play or sing the songs we call bluegrass. We remember how it was a class in bluegrass music that was taught at SFCC, way back in the early 1990’s, that led to the formation of the Inland Bluegrass Association. The class brought together many folks who wanted to know more about its history, its pioneers, and its many aspects of creating that unique sound. As we plan ahead this season, we want to revisit that origin story with more interactive and educational programming of the Showcase evening. Your board today is comprised entirely of very talented musicians who perform, teach, and know the background of the music. We have elected to use the first band slot from 6:30 to 7:30, beginning in November, to bring our audience and membership together in a creative and enjoyable way to learn more about Bluegrass.
In November, the theme will be Shape Note singing. Dan Gore, raised in the tradition back in North Carolina, and Lucinda Saue, a contemporary master of the Sacred Harp, will lead a session that presents some background, recordings, and a song we can all learn to sing using the shaped notes. Everyone can participate, no ability to read music is required. – Daniel Gore
